Malibu surfer in handcuffs after enjoying empty, epic waves

Some surfers would do anything to ride waves at perfect Malibu – an iconic spot usually packed with people – with no one else out.

Even risk a run-in with the law.

A stand-up paddle surfer who paddled out on Thursday, April 2, at the right-point break, a spot that has been closed down by officials because of coronavirus concerns, was chased down by Los Angeles County Fire Lifeguards, seemingly trying to evade capture by paddling away from the vessel as it sped toward him near the pier.

A social media post by brothers_marshall of the incident is going viral, the filmers chuckling as boats cut the paddler off.

“A highway pursuit!” the person taking the video said with a chuckle. “Oh my god, spray him with hose.”

An article in Stab Magazine reported the SUP’er rode about 20 waves, seemingly teasing cops and lifeguards like he was going to get out of the water, only to spin back out toward the ocean and ride more waves.

It wasn’t long before the stand-up paddler was taken away in handcuffs, the officers having to haul his board down the sand.

Los Angeles County beaches, along with others along the Southern California coast including San Diego, Seal Beach and Laguna Beach, are on lock down to curb the crowds.

And with new evidence showing it could be dangerous to paddle out, experts are warning people to stay clear of the ocean.

This solo SUP surfer isn’t the first to get busted for surfing. Another surfer in Manhattan Beach was issued a citation by police last weekend after officials shut down the beach.
